Rabbit TV CEO Finally Speaks Out on Aereo Case
ORLANDO, Fla., July 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — FreeCast Inc, operators of the world’s largest online entertainment aggregator Rabbit TV, today responded to the recent ruling against cloud-based antenna and DVR service Aereo, which the Supreme Court determined was violating copyright laws by providing consumers with web-based access to remote TV antennas.
The company’s CEO William Mobley commented that while he understands the logic behind the court’s ruling, he sees the initial success and controversy surrounding Aereo as a strong indicator of shifting consumer demand, now favoring the new generation of Wifi & mobile devices over traditional television for daily entertainment. Due to this shift, cable/satellite companies who’ve found success as middle-men aggregators now face declining values in this television-focused market. As the entertainment landscape continues to evolve away from the traditional TV model and toward mobile consumption, these companies will be required to focus primarily on tiered bandwidth offerings.
“In a recent talk with a major TV network VP, I explained that while his network may be getting a couple bucks a month from 50 million cable subscribers, he’s ignoring ten million or more subscribers from web-based entertainment services like Rabbit TV who are willing to pay $10-15 a month for online a la carte channel bundles including CBS, ABC, or HBO on their mobile and Wifi devices,” asserted Mobley. “This is also better business for targeting advertisers’ dollars, and if the networks don’t start offering multi-device a la carte bundles directly to those buyers, the content providers are bound to circumvent them and go directly to consumers online themselves.”
Mobley’s claims are further supported by a recent Nielsen Report, which indicated that despite cable companies offering 200+ channels in their prepackaged bundles, consumers are consistently watching only 17 or fewer channels on average.
