As Netflix continues building its original content portfolio, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the company is working on a live action show based on the classic video game franchise The Legend of Zelda. The video game series has been a smash hit for maker Nintendo since the 1980s, and is still going strong today, making the setting and characters familiar to young and old alike. Though TV is not a new frontier for the series, which had a short-lived animated series in the late 80s, this will be the first live action adaptation.
While Nintendo has produced dozens of beloved characters and masterpiece video games, that success has not carried over into the television industry, where shows based on Nintendo properties have traditionally not been very successful, with the notable exception of a Pokemon series. Netflix is reportedly hoping to create a more family-friendly show in the same style as HBO mega hit Game of Thrones.
