Fans of The Office finally have something to be excited about since the departure of their beloved Steve Carrell. One of the show’s most popular characters, Dwight Schrute (played by Rainn Wilson), may very well be getting his own NBC spin-off, with a likely premiere date in early 2013.
The concept, which was developed by Wilson along with Office executive producer Paul Lieberstein, is a “family comedy” that follows the day-to-day life of Dwight Schrute on his family’s beet farm and bed & breakfast. Although the deal has yet to be closed, the new show’s creators plan to introduce a number of new Schrute relatives and neighbors, and the series will most likely take place in a new location other than Scranton, PA.
Those fans who are upset about a Dwight departure from Dunder Mifflin needn’t worry just yet. If The Office gets picked up for a ninth season, Dwight will be returning to the office for one final hoorah before moving onto his new show in midseason.
Some readers may be surprised to find that this is actually the second time an Office spin-off has been seriously considered by the network. Back in the 07-08 season a spinoff was heavily developed, but it ended up evolving into the now-popular NBC series Parks & Recreation.
Is NBC making a good move with the Dwight spin-off, or is this just Joey all over again? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.
